The Arlington Community Foundation And USS ARLINGTON Commissioning Committee Announce a New Fund:
The USS Arlington Fund

Arlington, VA (August 24, 2012) - The Board of Trustees of the Arlington Community Foundation and the USS ARLINGTON Commissioning Committee are very pleased to announce the creation of a new fund, The USS Arlington Fund. The USS ARLINGTON, an amphibious class Navy ship has been named to honor the first responder heroes on 9-11-2001, in memory of the victims of the attack that day and will bear the name of the community that is home to the Pentagon. As one of three ships commemorating the victims, families and heroes of that tragic day, the USS ARLINGTON will be commissioned in March 2013 in Norfolk. The ship will include a commemorative and educational Tribute Room to recognize and honor those who lost their lives at the Pentagon on 9/11 and to tell the story about the heroism of Arlington County's first responders, who came to the aid of those who defend our freedom on that day. "Donations raised by the USS ARLINGTON Commissioning Committee with leadership and support from the Navy League of Hampton Roads will help fund designing and building the Tribute Room and to support commissioning related events" said Wanda Pierce, Executive Director of the Arlington Community Foundation.

Julian Fore, President of the Arlington Community Foundation, said "the Foundation is honored to partner with the Navy League Hampton Roads and the community members of the Commissioning Committee who will ensure the success of this special honor. Arlington played a crucial role in responding to the national tragedy of September 11th and this is truly a unique opportunity that allows each and every one of us to pay tribute to the brave men and women who lost their lives that day and those who came to their rescue."

Jim Pebley, Vice Chair of the USS Arlington Commissioning Committee, added "As a retired Naval Officer and longtime Arlingtonian, I am privileged to serve this committee.  With the Arlington Community Foundation's wonderful assistance, the donations of those who live, work or do business here will help sponsor this permanent tribute to the critical role that Arlington played on 9/11. The ship's peacekeeping mission will take this ship around the world, bearing the name of our community, ARLINGTON.  Thousands of visitors in hundreds in distant seaports will learn about the Arlington story in our Tribute room."

Contributions to the USS Arlington Fund may be made online at or via check mailed to ACF, 818 N. Quincy St., Suite 103 Arlington, VA 22203.  To help with the USS Arlington community outreach activities, contact Jim Pebley at
