The Arlington Community Foundation awards $155,185 to 51 local nonprofit organizations
November 18, 2009- The Arlington Community Foundation's Board of Trustees approved grant awards totaling $155,185 to 51 local nonprofit organizations and schools through its Community Enhancement and Arlington Education Fund grant programs. The approval of these grants brings the total grant monies awarded by the Arlington Community Foundation to more than $3.8 million to charitable organizations over the past 16 years.
Representatives from the organizations which were awarded grants and the volunteers who graciously gave of their time to read and review grant applications will be recognized at an event on December 8th. Please log on to our new website - www.arlcf.org - for updates on the time and location.
As a result of the Foundation's support and the generosity of numerous donors, many Arlington nonprofits will benefit. Most grant awards range from $1,000 to $10,000 and assist towards the improvement of the Arlington community through programs in the arts, youth services, education, the environment, health, housing, human services, legal services and senior engagement. In a particularly difficult year, the Foundation's Board chose to keep the level of funding up, demonstrating a firm interest by the Arlington Community Foundation to invest in the wellbeing of the Arlington Community.
Wanda Pierce, Executive Director of the Foundation, noted, "The grants awarded this year reflect the work of stellar nonprofits and educators in the Arlington area and the commitment of the Arlington Community Foundation to support their work in the community."
Two examples of the work recognized by the foundation through these grant cycles is a $10,000 Community Enhancement grant awarded to Arlington Free Clinic to fund an innovative program that will train over 380 volunteers to use new electronic medical records technology that would enable patients to have their files readily available to medical personnel upon their visit to the Arlington Free Clinic and area hospitals. In addition an Arlington Education Fund grant was awarded to Kenmore Middle School to support the creation of a Textured Tile Mosaic which the students will design and display permanently on the pilasters along the school's main hallway. Today's awards are a result of the 2009 Community Enhancement and Arlington Education Fund Grant programs which involve a group of volunteer reviewers and a dedicated committee of Foundation trustees and advisors. Also vital to the process of awarding grants is the support of a number of donor-advisors who fund a variety of grant areas including the environment and the arts. While the most significant contribution made to nonprofit organizations by the Foundation is made during the fall months, in the spring ACF also manages a large scholarship program which distributes over $290,000 in scholarship money to about 147 high school seniors and current college students.
The 2009 Community Enhancement Grants are made possible through the support of numerous donor-advised and unrestricted funds established at the Arlington Community Foundation, including: Ellen M. Bozman Fund, Community Fund for Children and Families, Demoney Family Fund, Fund for Arlington, Fund for the Arts, Arthur and Vivian Kallen Fund, Paul Kovenock Fund, Helen and John Rhett Family Fund, Senior Adult Endowment Fund, Shirley Hobbs Scheibla Memorial Fund, Charles E. Smith Family Foundation Fund and Wyatt Family Fund.
The Arlington Community Foundation is very excited to fund these organizations that will make a difference in the Arlington Community.
